What’s in my Hospital Bag?

In this post, I’m going to share what’s inside hospital bag, the baby bag, and big sister’s bag! It’s a lot of bags but I am not going to the hospital with just a purse this time! Over two years ago when I had my daughter, my husband and I thought we would be coming right home after a trip to labor & delivery because I had contractions all evening. Little did we know, my water broke at exactly 36 weeks pregnant right as they were about to discharge me. So, I have some experience on going to the hospital with literally just a purse. That’s why I intend to be fully prepared this time around especially with a toddler!

What’s in my Hospital Bag?

The Bag

First, let’s start with the bag itself. I chose a nice medium size bag to put all my hospital stuff inside. You don’ need a huge duffel bag to take with you. I absolutely love my Vera Bradley Weekend Bag because it’s just the right size and has a crazy amount of pocket space! Please note that this print is no longer available but you can find the same bag in a different prints here! Some of the sale prints are half the original price!

Toiletries

One of the most important thing to pack in your hospital bag are toiletries. As you can see, I have an array of items that I have divided up into 3 bags for easy access and less fuss if I need help getting something out of my bag. Needless to say, it will be easy to describe to get chapstick to my husband if I say its in the tan bag.

Here’s the break down of what is inside each of the three bags from left to right:

Pink Bag

  • Shower Cap
  • Dry Shampoo
  • Small Travel Body Puff
  • Travel-sized Body Wash
  • Noxzema
  • 2 Old Wash Cloths
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Q-tips
  • Razor -I couldn’t wait to finally shave my legs without missing any spots! I felt like a new woman!
  • Travel Contact Solution
  • Contact Case
  • Hair Ties- You can never have enough and having your hair pulled up will feel great during labor and delivery.

Tan Bag

  • Hand Cream
  • Chapstick
  • Makeup- I feel so much better with a fresh face and a little bit of makeup. I want to feel pretty and cleaned up after giving birth. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make yourself feel and look good!

Ziploc Bag Labeled “Take Me”

Anything in this bag will contain items that I don’t have a spare of or didn’t purchase an extra of to keep in my hospital bag. This will have all the items that I typically use everyday and will be ready to put inside my hospital bag without worrying about forgetting something. Some items that will go inside the bag that I did not take a picture of include:

  • My Glasses
  • Gestational Diabetes Testing Supplies
  • Hairbrush
  • Other makeup
  • Bobby pins (It will be easier to see them in here and you never know when you need one!)
  • Anything else that I think of along the way.

Clothes

During labor and delivery, you will have to wear or at least I had to wear the hospital gown. After baby, I brought two nursing nighties with matching robes to wear because I remember hating how uncomfortable the hospital gown was to me. I’m not so sure when my milk will come in this time around so I packed some Bamboobies just in case to prevent myself from leaking.

I packed my going home outfit along with a pair of cheap undies that I had from before to wear home. Also, I packed fuzzy socks, nursing sleep bras just in case, an extra pair of underwear, and an extra set of Bamboobies.

Breast Pump

Although I do plan on giving nursing a try again, I wanted to make sure that I am prepared if it doesn’t go the way as planned like last time by having my breast pump ready. In case you are wondering, I have a Medela Pump In Style breast pump.

Aside from my love/hate relationship with pumping in general, It’s a pump that I researched and it had great reviews when I had my first.

Other Items

The other times that I have packed are gifts from the baby for her Big Sister. I have a Daniel Tiger book that is about a new baby and a “Best Big Sis” long sleeve shirt wrapped up inside for our daughter. Also, who could go anywhere without a phone charger?!?!

Big Sister Bag

Inside the “Big Sister Bag”, I have all the items that will help make the hospital stay/visit entertaining for our 2 year old. Inside her bag I packed the following:

  • Finding Dory Graham Crackers
  • Water Cup- The nurses are wonderful and will be able to fill it up for her
  • Wipes
  • 2 Sets of Clothes- She is potty trained but still has accidents sometimes.
  • PJs and training pants- Just in case she has to sleep over with us.
  • Big Sister Book from Mommy and Daddy
  • Ipad- I do not have this packed but plan to have it packed when we are ready to go! I downloaded the Disney Movies Anywhere App so she can watch some movies.

Baby Bag

I will let you know right now that you literally don’t need all these outfits. All you need is a going home outfit and that is all for your hospital stay. With that said, I do not know when baby girl is arriving and I have 2 different outfits in mind depending if she arrives before, during, or after Christmas. Also, I would LOVE to get some really cute hospital pictures with big sister. That’s the only reason it looks like I went outfit crazy. Also, we have no idea what the weather will be like considering the temperature has been fluctuating.

Aside from the clothes, I have her baby book packed because they will do footprints in the book for you! It’s such a special keepsake to have and the nurses do such a great job!

What did you pack inside your hospital bag? Any of the same items as me?
